Andrew Light has been promoted by GMU's Board of Visitors from Professor of Philosophy and Public Policy, to University Professor of Philosophy and Public Policy. "University Professor" is a special rank at Mason, off of the normal faculty promotion scale, which is only initiated through a process of outside nomination. The letter reporting Light's successful nomination from the Provost describes the University Professor title as, "along with endowed chairs, the highest academic rank we maintain for faculty." Light is also Director of the Institute for Philosophy & Public Policy, and is currently on leave serving in the Obama administration as a senior State Department official working on international climate change negotiations.
