Section Information for Spring 2017

Are people in Africa living longer and healthier as the AIDS epidemic recedes? Do smoking habits of men and women differently contribute to mortality disadvantages in the US? Such questions have puzzled policy-makers in recent years. This course will give you the chance to examine how important sociological factors like gender, ethnicity/race, and marital status influence health inequalities found in populations around the world. In the process, students will also gain the technical skills to conduct population projections based on hypothetical social and demographic changes in countries. The course is ideal for those who are broadly interested in population health, such as sociology, anthropology, global affairs, economics, global and community health, nursing, and pre-med students.
