Section Information for Spring 2022

This course is an introduction to classical through contemporary Western Philosophy. The goal of the course is to acquaint you with some of the important positions and arguments on several central philosophical questions, such as: Does God exist? And if so, why does he allow so much suffering? What is a person? Do we have free will? How should a moral person behave? Is it morally wrong to eat meat or go to the opera while other people are starving? Are there correct and incorrect answers to moral questions like these?

Unlike many people's preconceptions about philosophy as being an esoteric or impractical field of study, these questions about religious belief and moral behavior are both practical and important for living our lives and structuring our society well. In this class, we will investigate some of the answers that famous thinkers have given to them. And we'll also come up with and discuss some of our own. But perhaps more importantly, by considering these questions together we will learn to interrogate the basic assumptions for our cherished beliefs, become more attuned to our own limitations, and gain a better understanding of the views of others to better understand those around us.

The course will be taught online through weekly synchronous zoom lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays.

PHIL 100 DL1 is a distance education section.
