Section Information for Spring 2018

  • This course is required for the Philosophy major, the Philosophy minor, and the Philosophy and Law minor.

In this course, we will be studying the great philosophers of the early modern period (roughly 1600-1800).  We’ll start the course by studying the shift from the Aristotelian/Ptolemaic “Earth-centered” model of the universe to Copernicanism (i.e., non-Earth-centered), and see how this shift was a big deal not just for astronomy and physics but for philosophy as well.  We will then turn to important writings of major figures of the early modern period such as Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Newton, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant and carefully study their arguments about knowledge, the mind/body problem, religion, and the foundations of modern science.
