This course examines the relationship between literature and philosophy, in particular, the influence of philosophical ideas and philosophical schools on literature. We will discuss and analyze philosophical works (treatise, dialogue, essay) and literary texts (fiction, essay, play, poem) as well as works of art (painting, music) from various periods in the history of philosophy, literature and art. We will concentrate on the presence of common and universal, perennial philosophical questions which are present in literary and philosophical writings. We will discuss works of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Pascal, Voltaire, Emerson, Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, Milosz and others.
