This course is a look at philosophical questions surrounding art and aesthetics and is divided into two basic parts.  The first part is an overview and introduction to philosophical questions surrounding art and interpretation.  The second part will explore the relation of art to truth via a more detailed look at particular philosophers: Plato, Schopenhauer, Heidegger, and Benjamin. Throughout the course we will be looking at both specific examples of art and particular case studies of theory.

Introduction to philosophical reflection on the arts by looking at the critical issues in the history of aesthetics. Applies considerations to specific works and explores these works in terms of their historical contexts and influences. Concentrates on one form of art or one period and always emphasizes questions of critical evaluation and art historical analysis. Offered by Philosophy. Limited to three attempts.
